Lord of the Rings Sites ~ Central Plateau NZ
The Road to Mordor Starts
Here
It begins, as all good adventures
should, with a sense that something slightly unhinged, and wonderful, is about
to happen. The dark, brooding cone of Mount Ngauruhoe rises ahead of you, better
known to fans as Mount Doom. Yes, that of Mount Doom. The one where rings
are unmade, destinies are decided, and poor choices tend to have fiery
consequences!
Standing in its shadow, it’s hard
not to feel a little dramatic. You might not have a cursed ring in your pocket,
although maybe some other kind, but the landscape insists on a certain level of
theatre. Winds definitely whip. Clouds gather like they’ve been briefed by a
film director. Even your footsteps feel more important than usual.
You don’t walk here; you journey, and it’s so exciting for so many.
Meads Wall:
Within the shadow of Mordor's Edge
Meads Wall is not to be missed: a jagged line of volcanic rock that looks like the earth simply split open one day and decided to leave it that way. In The Lord of the Rings, this was one of the gateways to Mordor. In real life, it’s just as dramatic, but minus the orcs. Well, generally, as there are often some, lurking around.Climb up, take a breath,
and look out. It’s stark. It’s wild. It’s the kind of place where imagination
doesn’t need much help. One minute you’re admiring the view, the next you’re
half-convinced you’re not alone and keeping an eye out for suspicious figures
in cloaks.
It’s not hard to see why
filmmakers chose this place. It already feels like a set, just without the
catering truck. You’ll need to go to the top of the Sky Waka for that!
And then there’s Gollum’s Pool … Yes, really!
Just when you think things can’t get any more surreal, the scrub closes in, and you arrive at Tawhai Falls just ten minutes from the road.Better known as Gollum’s
Pool, and fun to say, although the te reo for Tawhai Falls must never be overlooked nor forgotten.
It’s cinematic in the best way. Not grand and explosive, just intimate, eerie, and strangely peaceful and beautiful too.
The Magic Is Real…
But So Is the Responsibility
It’s a living, breathing landscape with deep cultural meaning and fragile ecosystems. The same places that doubled as Mordor are sacred, storied, and deserving of care.
One Last Thought…
Take the photos.
Recreate the scenes, but tastefully.
Also walk gently.
Stay on the tracks.
Respect the land and its stories.
In Aotearoa, we don’t just visit places like this, we look after them. That’s the heart of the Tiaki Promise.
As you embark on your journey through to the Central Plateau, we, at The Olive Rabbit Boutique Bed & Breakfast, will always point you in the direction of Mount Doom, Gollum's Pool and the Mordor Cliffs, namely Mount Ngauruhoe, Tawhai Falls & Meads Wall.
It will be fun and surreal too.
